The house that watched a wildfire approach — and opened its doors the next morning

he fire moved at roughly 14 feet per second when it crossed the eastern ridge above Palo Alto. By the time the engines reached the cul-de-sac, three of the seven adjacent homes were already gone. The fourth was the SIDCO residence we delivered in May.

We arrived the next morning expecting damage. We found a charred ceramic planter on the back terrace and a thin layer of ash across the standing-seam roof. The wall envelope was intact. The glazing had not crazed. The interior temperature, recorded by the home's HVAC sensor through the entire event, never exceeded 79°F.

This is what a four-hour ASTM E119 rating looks like in the field, and it is the result of an honest material decision: a wall is not a frame plus a finish. It is a system that has to refuse what fire is trying to do.
